The client

OCAC is a private, independent, non-profit college offering the Master of Fine Arts degree, the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and two certificate programs in Craft, as well as continuing education for adults and classes and workshops for youth. An integral part of the Portland ethos of the hand-made and sustainable, the OCAC campus, nestled in the West Hills, features the new LEED Silver Jean Vollum Drawing, Painting and Photography and Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson Thesis Buildings as the result of a $14.7 million dollar capital and endowment campaign. For more than three decades, OCAC has attracted nationally and internationally recognized artists, makers and thinkers to Portland through the robust and diverse Artists-in–Residence program, annual lecture series, and Hoffman Gallery exhibitions.

What they needed

Oregon College of Art and Craft was looking at creating an online portal (or webform) to process donations for the college. Driven through the Development & Support department, it was made a priority through the web group to implement an online method for processing these payments.

In addition to the requested project, it had to conform to the existing payment gateway employed on campus, Virtual Merchant. Accounting had a specific set of details that was required for each transaction processed through the form.

How I helped

Working with the same in-place distribution of Drupal for OCAC, I leveraged similar modules and spun up a secondary theme called ocac_secondary. This was used to support globalized breadcrumbs allowing users to believe their on the same site ( The form itself is hard-coded, but built around the requirements from Virtual Merchant and integrating a secure method for sending and receiving requests from the payment gateway. HTTPS was employed on the entire * Drupal enterprise system.

  • Multi-site architecture leveraging a secondary theme and globalized breadcrumbs.
  • Webform accessible for users under HTTPS that allowed donations to the college.
  • Information sent to the payment gateway as specified by Accounting.
